I’m in the process of finishing ~1000 SF of rift and quartered 6” red oak. I’ve played around with several colors, but did not like the ambering effect of the pure and natural. The 5% white does the trick without the ambering or darkening too much. A nice natural looking floor that’s not distracting.Rubio is very expensive up front and while it says monocoat, 2 coats are best. 1 coat looks a bit drab and uneven. After first coat, lightly scuff with a maroon pad, then apply 2nd coat. Buff with a cloth and it’s a nice lower sheen.I've had polyurethane floors and I know how they wear over time eventually getting scratched and worn looking and I was interested in finding something different and became very fascinated by the hardwax oil finishes I was reading about. We recently replaced our very dark exotic wood floors with a domestic hardwood, a white oak in a #2 grade which had a fair number of knots, mineral streaks, worm holes, and other variations. We chose the Rubio Monocoat Oil 2C, White 5% for a number of reasons including the photos from the Rubio website and some detailed analysis on Pete's Hardwood Floors website. I've never been a fan of the glossy coating polyurethane creates either.Installing per the directions went well. I had sanded the floors to 100 grit and they were dust-free. I buffed in the Rubio with the red pad for about 8-10 minutes in 100 sq ft sections, then switched to a white pad, and then finally a terrycloth towel. At first I probably didn't work hard enough at removing the excess oil and found that after I'd finished a room there was some oil in the knots in the floor, but later on I replaced the towels more often and found that helped as there was no excess oil to remove. I had about 1,250 sq ft of floor and I bought a 1.3 Liter size to start with. By the time I'd finished the project I needed a bit more where the 350 ml was just enough. We did our floors in the dead of winter so we had to live with the smell for a week, which was not noxious but we did grow somewhat tired of it just because we couldn't ventilate the house well this time of year.A month later we couldn't be happier. There was a bit of a haze on the floors in the rooms I did first which I attribute to not removing enough oil with the towels, but that seems to have diminished with traffic. I love the low sheen, seeing the grain in the wood, and just the feel of the floors. The White 5% darkened the floors just a tad, maybe a bit more than I expected. The floors also have a slight slipperiness to them, not in a hazardous way, but just different from polyurethane. Overall, we couldn't be happier and if all I need to do is a maintenance coat every few years then I will be completely sold on Rubio Monocoat.Product does NOT cover the square footage stated (not even close), nor does it protect well in the areas that are covered.I’ve now used the monocoat on two jobs , a year ago I finish my new floors and the end product is beautiful , durable , shows no scratches from my dogs claws. The finish is extremely waterproof .The next project was kitchen cabinets and again the product was excellent . It leaves a durable finish but looks like a fine hand rubbed finish.
